| Story : Karthik (Naga Chaitanya) wants to pursue a career in films as a director though he is an engineer and faces protest from his parents. Meanwhile, his house owner Joseph (Devan) has got a daughter Jesse (Samantha) and it on seeing her that Karthik's heart flutters and he falls for her instantly. From then on, he keeps going after her to win her heart and after few moments of yes and no, she finally admits her feelings for him. However, life takes a turn for Karthik due to something that Jesse does and that transforms their relationship. What happens from there forms the rest of the story. Artist performances : Naga Chaitanya has given a mature performance yet again and though he could have shown subtlety and emotion during sensitive scenes, overall it is a good job from him. Samantha looks very nice and even her performance is remarkable for a debutante. She has confidence, poise and good screen presence. Krishnudu came up with some humor, Surekha Vani was normal, Devan made his presence felt though briefly, Puri Jagannadh was himself, Sanjay Swarup was average, the others didn't have much to offer. Plus points : * cinematography * screenplay * single shot scenes * visual effects * content execution Minus points : * non-situational songs * low comedy quotient Analysis : The film is basically a mature romantic treat and given the depth of feelings, it strikes the raw nerve of many who have been through a similar experience in real life. While the first half is on the lighter side of emotions, things get intense during the second half and unknowingly, the audience gets dragged into the story. This is high on technical values and production aspects so departments like cinematography, screenplay, editing are masterly. This clubbed with mature performances has given a new appeal to the movie. On the commercial aspect, the film will appeal big time to the A-class audience and given the experience of the movie, perhaps the masses can also pick up a straw or two. Verdict :It's definitely worth watching! |

| Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented the Union Budget 2010-11 in parliament on Friday. Has he lived up to the expectations of the taxpayers? Is it a populist Budget? Will it also help India to grow? To find out read on.. Highlights: Income up to Rs 1.6 lakh - nil Income above Rs 1.6 lakh and up to Rs 5 lakh - 10 per cent * Income above Rs 5 lakh and up to Rs 8 lakh - 20 per cent * Income above Rs 8 lakh - 30 per cent. * Income Tax department ready with two-page Saral-2 return forms for individual salaried assesses. * New tax rates would offer relief to 60 per cent of tax-payers. * Service tax to remain 10 per cent * Increase in duty on gold and silver import * Clean energy cess of Rs 50 per ton to be levied on coal produced in India * 10 per cent central excise duty on all non-petroleum products * Structural changes in excise duties on cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos. * Revenue loss of Rs 26,000 crore on direct tax proposals. * 7.5 per cent duty on petrol, diesel, crude restored. * Exempt duty raised for all non-smoking tobacco producs * Investment linked tax deductions to be allowed to two—star hotels anywhere in the country. * Fiscal deficit seen at 4.8 per cent and 4.1 per cent in 2011—12 and 2012—13 respectively. * 20 per cent for income above Rs 5 lakh and up to Rs 8 lakh * 30 per cent tax for income above Rs 8 lakh. * Income Tax department ready with two—page Saral—2 return forms for individual salaried assesses * Surcharge on companies reduced to 7.5 per cent * Additional exemption of Rs 20,000 for long tem investment in infra bonds * Ten per cent tax slab for income upto Rs. 5 lakhs. * No income Tax upto Rs. 1.6. lakhs * National Social Security Fund created for workers in unorganised sector with allocation of Rs.1,000 crore * Government to give Rs.1,000 for each National Pension Scheme account opened by workers in the unorganised sector * Exclusive skill development programme for the textile sector * Fifty percent hike in allocation for schemes for women and child development * Rs.4,500 crore allocated for ministry of social justice and empowerment, a hike of 80 percent * Rs.2,600 crore allocated for ministry of minorities affairs * Rs.1,900 crore for Unique Identification Authority of India * Rs.147,344 crore allocated for defence * 2,000 youth to be recruited in central paramilitary forces * Draft Food Security Bill prepared and will be put in the public domain * Allocation on primary education raised from Rs.26,800 crore to Rs.31,300 crore * Banking facilities to be provided to all habitations with a population of 2,000 and more * Rs.66,100 crore allocated for rural development in 2010—11; Rs.40,100 crore for National Rural Employment Scheme; RS.48,000 crore for Bharat Nirman * Rs.1,270 crore allocated for Rajiv Awas Yojna for slum dwellers, up from Rs.150 crore, an increase of 700 percent with the aim of creating a slum free India. * Forty—six percent of plan allocations in 2010—11 will be for infrastructure development * Coal Regulatory Authority to be set up to benchmark standards of performance * Allocation for new and renewable energy sector increased 61 percent from Rs.620 crore to Rs.1,000 crore in 2010—11 * National Clean Energy Fund to be established * Rs.200 crore allocated as special package for Goa to prevent erosion and increase green cover. * Government committed to growth of SEZs. * Four—pronged strategy for growth of agricultural sector. * Rs.200 crore to be provided in 2010—11 for climate—resilient agricultural initiative. * Involvement of private sector in grain storage to continue for another two years. * In view of drought and floods, debt repayment period extended to June 2010. * Five more mega food processing projects in addition to 10 existing ones. * FDI flows in April—December 2009 $20.9 billion. * FDI policy to be made more user—friendly with one comprehensive document. * Apex level financial stability council to be set up for banking sector. * Indian Banking Association to give additional licences to private players. * Provision for further capital for regional rural banks. * Roadmap for reducing public debt in six months. * Implementation of direct tax code from April 2011. * Government actively engaged in finalising structure of general sales tax regime; hopes to implement it from April 2011. * Rs.35,000 crore raised from divestment in 2009—10; will be higher in 2010—11. * New fertiliser policy from April 2010; will lead to improved productively and more income for farmers. * Economy stabilised in first quarter of 2009—10; strong rebound in second quarter; overall growth at 7.2 and could be higher when Q3 and Q4 are taken into account. * Export figures for January encouraging. * Hope to breach 10 percent growth mark in not too distant future. * Government set in motion steps to bring down food inflation. * Need to review stimulus package; need to make growth more broad—based. * India has weathered global economic crisis well; Indian economy in far better position than it was a year ago. In 2009 Indian economy faced grave uncertainty; delay in southwest monsoon had undermined agricultural production. * First challenge now is to quickly revert to 9 percent growth and then aim for double digit growth; need to make recovery more broadbased. * Second challenge is to make growth more inclusive; have to strengthen food security. * Third challenge is to overcome weakness in government’s public delivery mechanism; a long way to go in this. |

| Sachin Tendulkar created history by firing the first double century in one-day internationals as India put South Africa to the sword in Gwalior. The 36-year-old was in indomitable form as he bludgeoned 25 fours and three sixes in a stunning 200 off 147 balls. It passed the previous best of 194, set by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar in 1997 and Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry last year. And it saw India, aided by a fabulous cameo of 68 off 35 balls from Mahendra Dhoni, to a superb 401-3 from 50 overs. Tendulkar, whose previous best one-day knock was the 186 not out he scored against New Zealand in 1999, is already the leading run-scorer in Test and ODI cricket. |

An excellent ensemble of cast, the correct casting, a capable producer and an able director, that is what is all about Leader. This deadly concoction makes the movie an ideal recipe for a hit. Let us first look at the story. Story : We have a CM Sanjeeviah (Suman) who is eliminated by his enemies in a landmine blast. This creates a vacuum at the top of the leadership. Someone has to move really quick and fast to fill the void. The CM's son Arjun Prasad (Rana) seems the ideal choice, but there are difficulties, there are the unexpected road blocks, the ambitious opponents and the cunning uncle are just a few of them. Arjun Prasad has to deal with all this to be the CM as he is the chosen one. He knows the pain of the people and he knows how to bring them out of that pain. He can empathize and understand and so he realizes that he is the one for the act. The rest of the film is all about how he gets there and ultimately wins the heart of the people. Performances : It's Rana all the way. Rana is a director's actor, and he has completely believed his director. The actor has allowed himself to be molded in such a great manner that we only see Arjun Prasad though out the film. Not an inch of Rana is to be seen. This is a great achievement for a debutant. But still he needs to work hard with expressions. His stone face is unable to bring out proper emotions. Kota as the uncle is convincing, the role was a cake walk for him. Subba Raju looked serious, but that is the way he was supposed to look. The heroines Richa and Priya did their jobs well, but they are actually a waste in the movie. Tanikella Bharani and Suhasini were adequate. Uday Bhanu stepped in with a special item song, she looked desirable. Plus Points : Rana Sekhar Kammula Songs&Re-recording Minus Points: Too-much preachy Few scenes were not convincing Technical Departments : Sekhar Kammula did his job well. Music is good and especially Re-recording deserves an applause. Dialogues were excellent and thought provoking. Cinematography is good. Art Direction by Thota Tharani is realistic and natural. Editing could have been better. Production values of the film are grand. Conclusion : Every inch of the conceptualization of the film belongs to Sekhar Kammula and so the film has his mark in every frame. Sekhar Kammula may not be a great director, but surely he knows his audience, after all he is trained. With all the years of experience behind him, it almost seems like he would not go wrong. He has the pulse of the audience correctly in his hold and it all works great for the film. The audiences are made to laugh and then cry and then get angry and then get frustrated and then get agitated and then get motivated. This film is a boutique of emotions, one could just sit there and go through them and enjoy every bit of it. Sekhar's presentation again as told may not be great, but surely it is apt. Credit should also goes out to the producers AVM for giving this big rope to the director to play around with his creativity; the director has made full use of this freedom. Go watch it for Rana, Sekhar and to encourage good movies in Tollywood. We need more of such films to keep our heads high. Barring the creative liberties taken by Kammula with senseless romance angle between young CM and two girls, the film has good content to connect to the contemporary political scenario. Verdict : May not be the best film of the Year, But probably one of the best film of 2010. |
